Cittą della Pieve is an umbrian little town situated on the border between Umbria and Tuscany at 508 mt. on see-level, it overlooks the Chiana valley and Trasimeno lake not very far from Latium, right in the centre of Italy, just at 25 km from Chianciano Terme.
The urban center expanded itself between VII and VIII century a.C. Between the XII and XIV centuries inside the city walls rose a large number of buildings: the new parish church "Pieve" where it's possible to see the first signs of gothic style, the cathedral tower that follows some romanic-Lombard- models.

Perugia and planned by Lorenzo and Ambrogio Maitani two architects from Siena, It's one of the most important example of military building in this region.
In the middle of XIII century, out of the city walls, some monastic order settled down, such as: S. Agostino, S. Francesco, Santa Maria dei Servi and Santa Lucia.
There are a lot of painting-works belonging to the sienese school: the most representative one is the gothic frescos in S. Bartolomeo's oratory that represents the "Pianto degli Angeli" (Angels' Crying) by Jacopo di Mino del Pellicciao follower of Lorenzetti brothers and Simone Martini.
Few centuries later, the greater "son" of Cittą della pieve Pietro Vannucci, called "Perugino", was born exactly around the middle of XV century.
He left many works in his native town from the well known "Adorazione dei magi" (Adoration of the magi) of 1504 in St.Maria dei Bianchi's oratorium, il "Battesimo di Gesł" (The Baptism of Jesus) and the "Madonna in Gloria e Santi" (Holy Mary in Glory and Saints) cathedral, and the "Deposizione della Croce" (The Depositions from Cross) in Santa Maria dei servi's church, "S.Antonio Abate fra i SS.Marcello e Paolo Eremita" ( St.Antonio between the Saints Marcello and Paolo Eremita) in St.Pietro's church .

By the year 1550 Giulio III del Monte named his nephew Ascanio della Corgna as governor. Thanks to the presence of Della Corgna's family many artists came to the town and they concentrate their efforts above all on the construction and decoration of the magnificent palace.
In the meanwhile around the year 1568 Antonio Circignani was born and his was named as his father: "Pomarancio"; he left a lot of masterpieces in his native town (in the cathedral, St.Francesco's church and in St.Maria dei Bianchi's church).
The architect Andrea Vici, Vanvitelli's scholar, added some noeclassical elements in some buildings as: Jesus' church, the interior of St.Agostino's church, St.Francesco and St.Lucia church, the Seminary and Bishof's palace.

Later (around the half of XIX century) this works was carried out by the architect Giovanni Santini: Theatre of Avvaloranti, Giorgi-Taccini's palace, Cartoni's palace and St.Maria dei Servi bell-tower.
Thanks to these last architectonic-works the historic area of Cittą della Pieve assumed that peculiar charme due to the genial and elegant intruduction of later renaissance, mannerist, baroque, rococo and neo-classical architectural elements to the previous medieval urban plan of the town; that shows its vitality up to recent time.
